The Bell Tower
Project Fund

Hawkshead Parish Church, St. Michael and All Angels, which is a Grade 1 listed building, urgently needs serious/restoration work on its bell tower.

A substantial sum of money needs to be raised in advance of the work being able to take place...(70,000) , this is obviously an enormous demand to make on the rural community and congregation. So we are fundraising.

For those unfamiliar with its history, it is a 14/15th century building (The Tower is the oldest part) and one of the best late medieval churches in the north west. The church is largely unaltered since 1585 and it is the principal architectural feature of the Hawkshead valley. There is more about its history here and about the bells here.

The church attracts a huge number of visitors and apart from the visitors it is well used by the community with its summer concert series, regular school services and other ad hoc events. It is incredibly popular as a wedding destination and most like to have the bells rung on their special day. It is especially noted for its belfry and bell ringing activities and the longest uninterrupted peal ever recorded took place in this Tower.

None of these things would be able to take place if the Tower were to fail!
And the Tower Roof IS failing.

There is serious water damage, the walls are damp, plaster and paint are coming away inside, and a large monument had to be removed for interim repairs because iron fixings have rusted because of the dampness.
